Cuphea carthagenensis (Jacq.) J.F.Macbr. APNI* 
Description: Erect or spreading herb up to 60 cm high, glandular-pubescent and bristly.
Leaves opposite, lamina ovate to elliptic, 10–55 mm long, 5–20 mm wide, both surfaces scabrous; subsessile to shortly petiolate.
Flowers small, in short monochasial cymes or sometimes solitary in the axils of the leaves. Hypanthium 4.5–5.5 mm long, 11-veined, shortly spurred at the base. Sepals 6, 0.5 mm long. Petals 6, obovate, 1.5–2 mm long, violet to purple. Stamens 11, included. Style included.
Capsule globose, c. 2 mm diam.; seeds 4–8, brown, discoid.
Flowering: spring.
Distribution and occurrence: Naturalized in moist situations in the Murwillumbah district. Native of C & S Amer.
