Description: Erect annual or short-lived perennial to 3 m high; stems ribbed, scabrous to pubescent.
Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets elliptic 3–7 cm long, 8–25 mm wide, upper surface glabrous, lower surface sparsely pubescent; petiole just shorter than leaflets; stipules absent.
Racemes 15–40 cm long, c. 40-flowered; pedicels c. 8 mm long. Calyx 4–5 mm long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Corolla c. 12–15 mm long, yellow with purplish brown venation; wings ± equal to keel with a purplish patch at base; keel incurved at middle, beak c. 10–12 mm long, not twisted.
Pod 35–45 mm long, black at maturity; seeds 2–3 mm long, pale yellow to reddish.
Flowering: mostly autumn–winter.
Distribution and occurrence: Naturalized, north from Grafton. Native of trop. Afr.
