Description: Robust herb with 1–3 scapes to 75 cm high, old leaf bases retained on stems; roots thick, spreading.
Leaves flaccid, basal and cauline, narrow-oblanceolate, 15–30 cm long, 8–20 mm wide, apex obtuse, base usually deep red and attenuate and stem-clasping, lamina with 1-several prominent longitudinal veins, glabrous or with few scattered woolly or septate hairs, or these denser on the margins or midvein.
Compound head globose, 17–30 mm diam., with up to 300 partial heads; partial heads with 7–12 florets, main bract with a small central herbaceous region silky at base and with glandular hairs overall, margins scarious; scape purplish with scattered long fine hairs. Corollas bright yellow.
Achenes 1–1.8 mm long, silky; pappus of 13–17 plumose bristles 3–4 mm long.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Restricted to swampy areas and drainlines; south from Canberra and Deniliquin.
