Description: Erect annual herb usually to 50 cm high, occasionally to 80 cm high, glabrous or sparsely hairy; stems leafy, unbranched below inflorescence.
Leaves linear to oblong, mostly 3–4.5 cm long, 1–5 mm wide; margins recurved, entire or crenate.
Inflorescence 1-several spike-like panicles; branches of the panicle short and with up to 10 heads each; heads campanulate, 3–4 mm long, 3–5 mm diam.; involucral bracts glabrous or sparsely hairy, margins paler, inner surface dark brown or red, often with a red apex. Florets white or tinged mauve, outer with ligules c. 1 mm long; inner florets c. 4.
Achenes elliptic with thickened margins, sparsely hairy; pappus of cream-coloured minutely barbellate bristles 2–3 mm long.
Flowering: summer–autumn.
Distribution and occurrence: Weed mainly on sandy soil, north from Tathra. Native of S Amer.
