Commelina africana L. APNI* 
Description: Perennial herb with woody rootstock; stems prostrate or ascending, glabrous to somewhat pubescent.
Leaves with lamina 2.5–5 cm long, 10–15 mm wide, pale green, apex acute, base rounded; sheath bearing long hairs at the mouth.
Spathes solitary, triangular to falcate, 1.5–2 cm long, apex acute to acuminate, on peduncles up to 1.2 cm long. Cymes 2, both well developed. Inner tepals yellow.
Capsule usually 3-seeded; dorsal loculus indehiscent, 1-seeded or empty, ventral loculus usually 1-seeded; seeds 3–4 mm long, dark brown and pitted or furrowed.
Flowering: spring–autumn.
Distribution and occurrence: A garden escape, sparingly naturalized in the Greenwich area. Native of S Afr.
