Description: Erect annual or biennial to c. 1 m high.
Leaves with sheath usually glabrous or the lower puberulent; ligule 1–2 mm long; blade to 4 mm wide, villous to glabrous, usually villous on upper surface.
Panicle narrow to pyramidal, lax, often secund and nodding after flowering, 5–20 cm long. Spikelets ovoid-lanceolate, 12–20 mm long including awns, florets imbricate at first, erect-patent after anthesis. Glumes obtuse, lower ovate to oblong, 3–5-nerved, 4–6 mm long; upper ovate to elliptic, 7-nerved, 6–9 mm long. Lemmas rounded on the back, elliptic, acute to obtuse, 7-nerved, 6–8 mm long, shortly 2-toothed at the apex; awn arising from near the tip, to 8 mm long. Paleas 80–95% as long as the lemma.
Flowering: spring.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows on disturbed sites. Native of Medit. region.
