Description: Caespitose perennial to 70 cm high.
Leaves with ligule membranous, c. 1 mm long; blade to 6 mm wide, slightly glaucous, midrib conspicuous.
Panicles 5–8 cm long. Racemes 4–11, to 7 cm long; peduncles shortly bearded in the axils, 2.5–7 cm long; joints and pedicels more than half the length of the sessile spikelet, with hairs to 3.5 mm long. Sessile spikelet 3.5–5 mm long, the callus shortly bearded. Lower glume acute to narrow-obtuse, densely long-hairy on the back in the lower 30–50%, sometimes with a depression or pit; margins of the upper glume inflexed, finely ciliate. Lower lemma hyaline, about 60% as long as the glumes. Upper lemma stipe-like, passing into a geniculate awn twisted in the lower part; awn c. 2–2.5 cm long. Anthers 3. Distribution and occurrence: Grows in dry woodland.
