Description: Glaucous annuals, mostly to 1.2 m high.
Leaves with ligule obtuse, rarely with a point, 2–5 mm long; blade 3–12 mm wide, scabridulous.
Panicle loose, equilateral, ± contracted, to 25 (-35) cm long. Spikelets 2–2.5 cm long without the awns, each with 2 or 3 florets. Glumes equal or subequal, 5–9-nerved, 16–24 mm long, the florets not disarticulating at maturity. Lemmas narrow-lanceolate, 2-lobed with the tips extended as distinct bristles, hairs present or absent below the insertion of the awn or only a few hairs around the insertion; awn almost straight or once bent below middle and twisted below, inserted at about 30% of the lemma length from the base, 2–3 cm long. Palea with 1 or 2 rows of cilia along the edges of the keels, the back prickly or rarely smooth.

Distribution and occurrence: Occasional escape from cultivation. Native of Eur.
