Description: Caespitose perennial to c. 1 m high.
Leaves with ligule truncate to shortly laciniate, leathery, ciliate, 0.3–1.5 mm long; auricles usually thickened and spreading, pubescent; blade expanded or weakly rolled, 2–5 mm wide, ribbed or slightly ribbed, scaberulous to pubescent.
Panicle exserted, contracted (although spreading at anthesis). Spikelets gaping after floret disarticulation, otherwise tightly closed, 10–19 mm long (excluding awn). Glumes unequal, acuminate. Lemma 5–8 mm long, slightly gibbous at maturity, tuberculate, scabrous with antrorse hooks at the apex, reddish brown; lobes minute; coma 2–5 mm long. Callus sharp, sturdy and curved. Awn strongly twice bent, 3–5 cm long. Palea subequal to the lemma.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Widespread on heavier soils, heavily grazed.
