Description: Erect, caespitose perennial to 0.9 m high, erect or geniculate at the base; culms slender, few-branched, usually smooth and glabrous.
Leaves with blade narrow, flat, pungent-pointed, c. 3 mm wide, minutely to densely scabrous; sheath striate, smooth, glabrous; ligule membranous, truncate, 0.2–0.5 mm long.
Spike not dense, 2.5–7.5 cm long. Spikelets spreading and at length reflexed, 3–8-flowered. Glumes 3–5-grooved, 8–9 mm long, tapering into short, pungent points. Lemmas lanceolate, 7–11 mm long, scabrous on the margins, pungent pointed or with awn-like tips c. 5 mm long. Palea glabrous, scabrous on the margins.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows chiefly on black soil flats at higher altitudes, often on swampy land.
