Description: Tall shrub or small tree to c. 3 m high, ± pubescent.
Leaves opposite or in whorls of 3; lamina mostly narrow-elliptic to oblong-ovate or linear on juvenile plants, mostly 5–15 cm long, 0.5–3 cm wide, apex acute or obtuse, lamina glabrous or minutely hairy on lower surface on young leaves, lateral veins ± straight, ± parallel, prominent; petiole 2–5 mm long.
Flowers usually axillary, solitary or paired; pedicels up to 10 mm long. Calyx c. 6–8 mm long, ± hirsute. Corolla white, tube 8–9 mm long, lobes usually 5, 10–12 mm long, ± glabrous.
Fruit ± cylindrical, to 3 cm long, red, crowned by persistent calyx.
Flowering: late winter to spring.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in subtropical rainforest, north from Richmond R.
