When proposing the synonymy of Asplenium rutifolium with A. subglandulosum Field (2020) referenced the 'considerable reservation' expressed by Brownsey (1998) when retaining the two species as separate for the Flora of Australia Pteridophyte treatment. Brownsey (1998) observed variation in hair expression, and inferred variation in ploidy from spore size measurements, but noted the two were not correlated. Brownsey (1998 p.327) suggested 'Resolution of the taxonomy of this group is unlikely without a thorough investigation of morphology and cytology in relation to habitat and geographic range'.
