Description: Very robust caespitose perennial to 2 m high; culms branched, terete, glabrous and smooth.
Leaves with sheath smooth and glabrous; ligule to 0.2 mm long; blade flat or involute, stiff to flexuous, to 4 mm wide, scabrous.
Panicle narrow, contracted to open or spike-like, 7–30 cm long, branches filiform. Glumes lanceolate, unequal, aristulate. Lemma linear-elliptic, convolute, 6–11 mm long, scabrous all over or at least toward the apex; awns subequal, slender, to 23 mm long.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Usually grows in dry sclerophyll forest on stony or rocky soils; north from Maitland.
