Description: Caespitose perennials to c. 1 m tall.
Sheaths glabrous or hairy; auricles 0–1.-9 mm long; ligule 0.4–0.5 mm long, membranous; blade flat, 1.8–5 mm wide.
Inflorescence spicate, to 70 cm long, with 5–10 spikelets solitary at each node. Spikelets 26–40 mm long, 4–9-flowered, Glumes subequal, lower 4.8–6.1 mm long, 4–5-nerved; upper glume 5.6–7 mm long, 4–6-nerved, with an awn 1–1.5 mm long. Lemmas 8.5–10 mm long, 5-nerved, glabrous or scabrous, awned, the awns remaining straight when dry; lowest lemma with an awn 2–7.5 mm long, remaining lemmas with an awn 4.4–14.5 mm long; palea c. 90% lemma length. Caryopsis 67–73% palea length.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in open areas on dark brown basaltic soils or good alluvial soils.
