Description: Stoloniferous perennial to c. 0.7 m high; culms decumbent, terete to flattened, 0.8–2 mm wide, glabrous, 1–4-noded, lower nodes sometimes swollen.
Leaves with sheath glabrous to scabrous, lightly to moderately ribbed; ligule acute to acuminate, 5–11 mm long; blade 1–4 mm wide, scabrous, moderately to deeply ribbed.
Panicle erect, becoming flexuous, incompletely exserted, to 21 cm long. Spikelets 12–21 mm long with 5–7 florets. Lower glume narrow-lanceolate to triangular, 1–3-nerved; upper lanceolate to broad lanceolate, 3–5-nerved. Lemmas scabrous, 7-nerved, 6.2–8.2 mm long; apex 4-toothed; awn arising 35–50% of the lemma length from the lemma tip, straight, scarcely twisted. Palea 75–95% the length of the lemma.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in permanent swamps, in cold areas; uncommon. district.
