Description: Slender annual, erect or occasionally geniculate at the base, to 0.5 m high; culms solitary or tufted, 3- or 4-noded above the base.
Leaves with sheath scabrid; ligule acute, 3–6 mm long; blade to 0.3 mm wide.
Panicle open, broad-ovoid, 4–11 cm long; pedicels up to twice as long as spikelets. Spikelets 2–2.5 mm long. Glumes obtuse, 1-nerved, minutely scabrous along margins and keel. Lemmas 50–65% as long as the glumes, the lower often unawned; awn 2.2–3.5 mm long.
Flowering: spring.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in pastures, disturbed grassland, or open woodland on all soil types. Native of Medit. region.
