Description: Herb to 80 cm high, stems glandular-hairy.
Leaves 15–20 cm long, irregularly pinnate, with 3–6 pairs of larger leaflets with 2 or 3 smaller pairs in between; largest leaflets to c. 7 cm long; leaflets ± elliptic to oblanceolate, margins toothed, hirsute; stipules leafy.
Terminal racemes 5–10 cm long. Sepals 2–3 mm long. Petals c. 5 mm long. Stamens c. 15, strongly perigynous.
Fruit burr-like, 7–10 mm long, enclosing 1 or 2 achenes.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Recorded in woodland and grassland on better soils. Native of Eur.
