Description: Annual.
Stems 10–50 cm high.
Flowers 15–25 mm diam. Sepals 5. Petals 5–8, bright scarlet when fresh, often yellowish when dry, with a dark purple blotch at base. Anthers blackish purple.
Achene beak short.
Flowering: spring or summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Poisonous to stock. Native of S Eur.
