Acanthospermum hispidum DC. APNI* 
Description: Erect branching herb up to 1 m high; stem with multicelled hairs.
Leaves ovate to elliptic, usually 2–12.5 cm long, 10–30 mm wide, sometimes reduced near inflorescence, shallowly toothed to lobed, pubescent, pilose on both sides, glands beneath, sessile or petiolate.
Heads narrow-campanulate; outer involucral bracts elliptic, 4–5 mm long; inner bracts longer, spinescent at maturity. Ray florets yellow, shorter than bracts and disc florets. Disc florets c. 7.
Achenes cuneate, compressed, 4–7 mm long, with hooked prickles and 2 divergent spines.
Flowering: summer–autumn.
Distribution and occurrence: Weed of roadsides, creekflats and sandy soils, occurs in cultivation; the burrs are a troublesome wool contaminant; north from Kendall. Native of Amer.
