Aristida calycina var. calycina R.Br. APNI* 
Description: Tufted erect perennial to 2 m high; culms wiry, strongly branched.
Leaves with sheath smooth or scaberulous; ligule c. 0.3 mm long; blade convolute or conduplicate or sometimes flat, to 1.5 mm wide, long-scabrous on upper surface.
Panicle contracted, usually loose, to 15 cm long, branches few, short. Glumes lanceolate, equal or unequal, 6–20 mm long, lower acute to acuminate, upper obtuse. Lemma linear-elliptic, 6–9 mm long, purple or brown with darker margins; awns flattened, divergent, to 30 mm long.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows on poor or sandy soils.
