Description: Annual, biennial or perennial herbs; usually with woody taproot.
Leaves usually forming a basal rosette, alternate.
Inflorescence paniculate, cymose or corymbiform; heads cylindric; involucral bracts in 2 rows, outer bracts shorter than inner; receptacle flat, naked. Florets all ligulate, bisexual, fertile; corolla 5-lobed. Anthers commonly green, usually sagittate, with apical appendage. Style branches attenuate.
Achenes ± fusiform, outer ones dorsiventrally compressed, all unequally ribbed with 3–5 stronger ribs; pappus of many bristles, usually persistent.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 30 species, Asia & Australia. Australia: 1 species (native).
