Description: Monoecious trees, glabrous, with growth of leading or vertical (orthotropic) shoots with different morphology from the lateral or horizontal (plagiotropic) branches.
Foliage trimorphic, leaves often arranged in regular spiral rows on the stem (orthostichous), sessile, with numerous subparallel, longitudinal veins.
Cones terminal on first order, leafy, lateral branches. Male cones cylindrical, sporophylls spirally arranged. Female cones spiny; bract and scale fully fused; bract scales winged, spirally arranged; bracts shedding at maturity to leave the persistent thick central axis.
Seeds surrounded by a single narrow wing, free from bract-scale.
