Description: Shrubs or trees with tough 'bootlace' bark.
Leaves opposite or rarely some alternate.
Flowers in short terminal or axillary racemes or heads; bracts absent. Hypanthium tubular. Sepals 4. Petals scale-like, 4, free or united in pairs. Stamens 8, anthers sessile. Ovary 1-locular, style very short.
Fruit a drupe.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 70 species, southern China, Malesia, Pacific islands. Australia: 1 species (native).
