Description: Glabrous annuals.
Leaves sessile, bases of opposite pairs fused and stem-clasping; stipules absent.
Flowers in spreading dichasial cymes. Calyx tubular, inflated below, whitish with green wings. Petals 5, clawed, longer than sepals. Stamens 10. Ovary 1-locular; styles 2.
Capsule opening by 4 short valves.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 4 species, Europe to temperate Asia. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
