Description: Shrubs or small trees; new growth silky or glabrous.
Leaves opposite, petiolate.
Inflorescences axillary, flowers usually solitary. Flowers 5-merous. Sepals rounded, persistent. Petals white or pink. Stamens numerous, multiseriate; anthers with an apical appendage. Ovary inferior, 2- or 3-locular; ovules in 2 vertical rows on the placenta; style slender; stigma not dilated.
Fruit a fleshy berry; seeds numerous, small, testa bony; embryo curved, cotyledons very small.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 15 species, chiefly New Guinea to New Caledonia. Australia: 4 species (endemic), Qld, N.S.W.
