Description: Annual herbs.
Leaves alternate.
Flowers sessile or subsessile in leaf axils, 1–several per axil, the lower flowers cleistogamous. Sepals 5, or 3 or 4 in cleistogamous flowers, persisting in fruit. Corolla campanulate, 5-lobed in upper flowers, reduced or abortive in cleistogamous flowers. Stamens 5 or 3 or 4 in cleistogamous flowers. Ovary inferior, usually 3-locular with axile placentation, sometimes 1-locular with parietal placentation.
Capsule opening by pores at or usually above the middle.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 8 species, chiefly North America. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
