Description: Annual or rarely biennial herbs with slender taproot.
Leaves 1–3-pinnate; petiole sheathing.
Inflorescence an axillary or terminal compound umbel; involucral bracts few or absent; rays 6–12 or absent; involucel bracteoles several, linear. Flowers bisexual, white or pink. Sepals inconspicuous or absent. Petals obovate, with inflexed apex. Stylopodium thick-conical.
Fruit oblong or ovoid, slightly laterally compressed, tuberculate or bristly; carpophore bifid; mericarps with slender ciliate ribs, furrows covered with numerous barbed prickles or tuberculate.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 20 species, mainly Mediterranean region. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
