Description: Herbs, glabrous or villous.
Leaves opposite, petiolate.
Inflorescences racemose or axillary in clusters. Flowers pedicellate. Calyx ribbed or winged, often 2-lipped and short toothed, usually 5-lobed. Corolla 2-lipped; lower lip 3-lobed. Stamens 4; anterior; anthers connivent in pairs. Ovary apically usually with short coarse hairs.
Capsule oblong, included in persistent calyx, septicidal; seeds numerous, pitted.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 68 species, Old World tropics and subtropics. Australia 4 species, 3 naturalised, 1 native to Qld.
