Description: Terrestrial ferns, usually arborescent, trunk covered with persistent bases of old stipes.
Fronds often stiffly erect, stipe bears soft hairs on lower parts, winged at the base with 2 broad stipular expansions; lamina leathery, 2-pinnate when mature, stomates present.
Fertile pinnae borne at the base of the lamina, not reduced in size; sporangia arranged in masses along the major veins of the pinnae, becoming confluent and covering the entire lower surface.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 2 species, Southern Hemisphere, tropical & temperate regions. Australia: 1 species (native).
