Description: Woody vines with tendrils entire or 2-branched; mostly dioecious.
Leaves palmately [or pedately] compound; leaflets 1–6. Cymes axillary, ± sessile.
Flowers unisexual, 4-merous. Calyx lobed to truncate. Petals free, apex hooded. Disc distinct or obscure. In male flowers stamens inserted below disc; vestigial ovary sometimes present. In females staminodes present; ovary 2-locular; 2 ovules in each loculus; style short or absent; stigma usually broad and 4-lobed.
Berry 1–4-seeded; seeds transversely wrinkled.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 90 species, Malesia, Australia. Australia: 4 or 5 species (4 species endemic), Qld, N.S.W.
