Description: Wiry, often almost shrubby perennials with contracted or loose rhizomes with extravaginal innovations.
Spikelets sessile or very shortly pedicellate in a simple spike or in a scarcely branched spike-like panicle, 3-flowered, the lower 2 sterile and reduced to empty lemmas, the terminal bisexual. Rachis disarticulating above the glumes, the 3 lemmas falling as a whole. Lodicules 2, large, hyaline. Stamens 4. Styles short, distinct.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 6 species, endemic Australia. Australia: all States except N.Terr.
