Description: Herbs or shrubs, often with tuberous roots.
Leaves alternate or nearly opposite, flat [or terete].
Inflorescences terminal cymose panicles [or flowers solitary]. Sepals not persistent. Petals 5, free. Stamens 5–numerous. Ovary superior, ovules numerous.
Capsule 3-valved, epicarp shed, endocarp valves become detached from receptacle, but hang by intervalvular bristles; seeds numerous.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 50 species, North & South America, Africa & Asia. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
