Description: Annual and perennial herbs, aromatic.
Leaves cauline, mostly opposite, flat, pinnatifid, pinnatisect or pinnate, gland-dotted.
Inflorescence cymose or paniculate, heads stalked, radiate.; heads narrow-cylindrical; involucral bracts fused, herbaceous, 1-seriate, equal; receptacle flat, naked, pitted. Ray florets few, female, 1-seriate, ligulate, fertile. Disc florets bisexual, fertile, tubular; anthers truncate to sagittate at the base, with an acute ovate appendage at the apex; style branches all similar, flattened, truncate, papillose.
Achenes all similar, linear, 4-angled, slightly flattened; pappus of scales, often with 1 or more awns.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 50 species, North & South America, Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
