Leaves usually alternate, flattened or semiterete.
Flowers either axillary in 1–4-flowered clusters or gathered towards the ends of the branches into spike-like inflorescences, bisexual or female. Perianth segments 5. Stamens 5 or absent. Stigmas 2 or 3. Seeds horizontal; embryo spiralled in one plane.
Fruiting perianth relatively unchanged, without appendages.
