Leaves alternate, ± sessile.
Flowers unisexual, solitary, surrounded by an involucre of 1 bract and 2 bracteoles; lower flowers female, upper ones male. Perianth green, 4-lobed, persistent, enclosing the achene.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 species, Mediterranean region. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
