Description: Trees.
Leaves alternate, 1-foliolate, margins toothed or almost entire, glabrous or almost so; petiole usually with a prominent upper pulvinus at junction with lamina.
Flowers axillary, peduncles 1-flowered, solitary, clustered or forming terminal panicles. Petals 4, 5 or 0. Stamens numerous, inserted on a flat disc, anthers placed back to back, dehiscing from the apex by lateral slits. Ovary 2–4-locular.
Fruit a capsule, leathery or woody and covered with bristles or prickles.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 120 species, mainly Asia to America. Australia: 5 species, Qld, N.S.W.
