Description: Annual or perennial glandular-pilose herbs; stems erect.
Leaves opposite, simple, margins toothed, sessile or with winged petiole.
Heads small, in terminal cymes; heads broad-campanulate or hemispherical; involucral bracts 2-seriate, herbaceous, outer bracts 5, spreading or reflexed, inner bracts c. 8, each enclosing a ray floret, membranous; receptacle convex to short-conic, with narrow membranous somewhat persistent scales. Ray florets in one row, female, fertile, inconspicuous. Disc florets bisexual, fertile, tubular, 5-toothed. Anthers entire at the base, terminal appendages acute. Style branches short, flattened, acuminate or subobtuse.
Achenes compressed obovoid-oblong, often incurved; pappus absent.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 95 species, tropical & temperate regions. Australia: 2 species (1 species endemic, 1 species naturalized), all mainland States.
