Description: Trees or shrubs.
Leaves alternate, imparipinnate; stipules often spinescent on older stems; stipels usually present.
Inflorescences axillary racemes, bracts caducous, bracteoles absent. Calyx teeth short, upper 2 ± fused. Standard large, reflexed. Stamens free or diadelphous; anthers ± uniform. Ovary stipitate, style inflexed, hairy at apex; ovules usually many.
Pod linear, compressed, narrow-winged along upper suture; seeds with a small aril.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 20 species, eastern North America & Mexico. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
