Description: Small glabrous annuals; culms slender, leafy toward base.
Leaves with ligule membranous, minute; blade narrow, involute.
Inflorescence a very slender, lax spike.
Spikelets solitary, with 1 sessile floret, ± embedded in rachis. Glume solitary (terminal spikelet with 2 glumes), minute, awnless. Lemma closing the hollow along rachis, linear, 3-nerved, stiff, leathery, glabrous, tapering to a bristle-like awn; palea strongly ciliate on nerves.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 species, Mediterranean region. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
Derivation: from the Greek words for ‘bare’ and ‘tail’ referring to the slender lax inflorescence.
