Description: Shrubs or herbs, cystoliths present.
Leaves ± erect, petiolate.
Inflorescences interrupted axillary or terminal panicles or racemes with flowers arranged singly, in pairs or cymes in axils of opposite bracts; bracts and bracteoles of similar size. Calyx deeply 5-lobed. Corolla tube wider above; lobes ± equal. Stamens 2, staminodes 2. Ovary with 2 ovules per loculus.
Capsule club-shaped; seeds 1–4, compressed-globose, abruptly narrowed at base into a short appendage.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 40–50 species, chiefly tropical regions. Australia: 3 species (2 species endemic), Qld, N.S.W., N.T.
