Description: Trees or shrubs.
Leaves opposite, subopposite or rarely whorled, simple, margins entire or toothed.
Inflorescences terminal racemes. Calyx 4-toothed. Petals 4, linear, often cohering into a tube and spreading towards apex. Stamens 4. Ovary inferior, 1-locular.
Fruit a 1-seeded berry.
Flowering: March–November
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 91 spp., Himalayas to Australia. Australia: 6 spp. (endemic), Qld, NSW.
This genus may not belong in Escalloniaceae - evidence is equivocal on placement. APGIII places it here rather than in its own family.
