Description: Shrubs or perennial herbs.
Leaves simple.
Flowers in terminal few- to many-flowered racemes, often spike-like; each flower subtended by 3 bracts shorter than the calyx. Calyx tubular with distinct lobes and usually with capitate glandular hairs. Corolla tube usually longer than the spreading lobes. Style with 5 short stigmatic branches.
Capsule enclosed in persistent calyx.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 12 species, temperate regions. Australia: 1 species (native).
