Description: Shrubs or trees.
Leaves alternate.
Flowers in axillary or subterminal panicles, bisexual, 3-merous. Calyx lobes 6, unequal, pubescent, [sometimes persistent in fruit]. Fertile stamens 6 or 9; anthers 4-locular; staminodes usually large. Ovary ovoid, style filiform.
Drupe obovoid to globose, small to large and fleshy; receptacle not enlarged in fruit.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 145 species, chiefly tropical America. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
