Description: Tufted annuals or perennials with leafy culms.
Inflorescence cylindrical, racemose.
Spikelets all alike, bisexual, 1-flowered, sometimes very small, pedicellate, falling entire with the rachilla disarticulating below the pedicels, subsessile on the continuous axis of a terminal lax spike-like raceme. Palea minute. Stamens 3.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 10 species, tropical & subtropical areas of Old World & Australia. Australia: 2 species (native), all mainland States except Vic., New Guinea
