Description: Perennial herbs or shrubs with stellate hairs.
Leaves sometimes angular, margins ± toothed.
Flowers axillary and solitary or in terminal heads or clusters. Epicalyx segments 5, free or fused, attached near base of calyx. Calyx 5-lobed. Staminal column truncate or 5-toothed, with some free filaments; stamens 5–10. Ovary 5-locular, each loculus 1-ovulate; styles 10 with capitate stigmas.
Fruit dehiscent or indehiscent, ± awned.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 200 species, tropical & subtropical regions. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
