Description: Tufted perennials with short rhizomes and extravaginal shoots.
Leaves with ligule a dense fringe or zone of hairs; orifice bearded; blade rolled in bud.
Inflorescence a spike-like raceme.
Spikelets solitary, reduced at the base of the inflorescence, dorsally compressed, bearded at the base, falling entire. Florets 2, the lower male or sterile, the upper bisexual. Lower glume 5–7-nerved, hairy only at the base; upper 7–11-nerved with dense hairs from the lower margins. Lower lemma 5–7-nerved, 2-keeled, ciliate or glabrous; palea to as long as the lemma or absent. Upper lemma subequal to the lower, hyaline, 1–5-nerved, with flat thinly hyaline ciliate margins; palea ± equalling its lemma, 2-nerved at least below, free or embraced by the lemma and similar to it in texture.
