Description: Trees or shrubs with milky latex; monoecious or dioecious.
Leaves toothed, unlobed or lobed, 3-veined from base.
Flowers of both sexes in short dense axillary spikes. Perianth segments 4. Stamens 4, inflexed in bud.
Individual fruits drupes, enclosed in fleshy perianth segments and crowded into syncarps.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 10 species, Northern Hemisphere. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
M. nigrai L., the Black Mulberry, is often cultivated for its blackish fruits but it is not known to be naturalized. The leaves are scabrous above and pubescent below.
