Description: Annual herbs.
Leaves opposite, shortly fused at base; stipules absent.
Flowers in axillary or terminal cymes. Sepals 4, free. Petals 4, opposite the sepals. Stamens 4 or 8. Ovary 1-locular.
Capsule opening by 8 teeth.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 6 species, Europe. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
