Description: Annual, rarely perennial, glabrous herbs.
Leaves alternate, dentate-serrate to 2- pinnatisect.
Inflorescences solitary, pedunculate, radiate. Involucre hemispherical. Involucral bracts in 3–4 rows, wiith pale to dark brown or black scarious margins. Receptacle conical without receptacle scales. Ray florets female or neuter, fertile or sterile; limb white, rarely yellow at base. Disc florets hermaphrodite, fertile; corolla 5-lobed, yellow.

Distribution and occurrence: Four species, south-western Europe, north-western Africa.Australia: One species widely cultivated as an ornamental or widespread as a weed. Introduced in the Central Coast of New South Wales.
