Description: Herbs or shrubs.
Leaves opposite; margins entire; the bases of opposite leaves joined by membrane-like interpetiolar stipules.
Inflorescence terminal, often appearing axillary, variously cymose (botryoidal or branched-botryoidal). Flowers usually small, unisexual and plants dioecious; usually 5-merous. Calyx deeply divided, lobes obtuse, ciliate. Corolla campanulate or with tube cylindrical; lobes imbricate in bud. Stamens included, inserted on the corolla tube just below half-way. Stigma capitate or oblong, undivided.
Fruit a septicidal capsule, with the 2 carpels almost separating; usually black, woody. Seeds many, ellipsoid, brown.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 23 species, Australia, New Zealand. Australia: c. 22 species (endemic), Qld, NSW,Vic., SA, WA. One species (presumed extinct) in New Zealand is of uncertain status, possibly a Geniostoma.
Species formerly placed in Logania section Stomandra have been transfered to a new genus, Orianthera C.S.P.Foster & B.J.Conn.
